Mick Fanning has joined the protest against the possible ocean terminal project at Kirra Beach. Local and world renowned surfer, Fanning said, “My favourite wave in the world is Kirra and I’m not the only surfer that feels that way. So when I heard about the proposed cruise ship terminal, my first thought was we’re going to lose one of the greatest surf destinations on earth”. He is definitely not the only one to feel this way with thousands of locals signing online petitions against the development as well as major surfing websites around the world showing their objection as well.
The development group Leda Group has only unveiled a drawing of the development with no proposal being submitted to the government. The drawing does include apartment blocks and a casino for which licences are being tended by the government. Acting Premier Jeff Seeney is said to be sceptical about the plans with technical and economic feasibility being seen as issues for the project going forward.
Protesters has organised a ‘paddle out” on Sunday the 19th of January, with protesters determined to save their beaches from the go ahead of this major project.
